Retouching a Photo in Photoshop

The image that we’re going to start with is this one: http://i531.photobucket.com/albums/dd358/ashlee_0611/2nk28p0.jpg

A great thing in graphics making is knowing how to retouch a person’s skin – or to make a model flawless. And well, let’s be serious, nobody is perfect.

Open the image in the link and duplicate the original layer.

Go to Filter > Blur > Box Blur and set it to 12 pixels. (You can use other types of blur, but make sure that it makes your image look pretty much like this:

Yes, it looks pretty blurry for now, but that’s not how it is going to look like in the end.

Add a Layer Mask to this layer:

Press Ctrl+I to invert the Layer Mask. Your image will look exactly like in the beginning.

We should start with retouching the skin. So, this is what you are going to do with this layer: the skin.

Take a round brush from your Basic Brush Set (you may choose whichever you want, but it’s better if you use a blurry edged one, because it makes it easier – you can choose the size yourself and vary it according to the parts you are retouching). Also, if you made any kind of mistake, you can erase it with a normal Eraser.

It looks like plastic now, so change the opacity of the image to 50%.

It looks way more realistic because you can see her original traits.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Alt+E (shall create a Stamp) and use the Burn Tool so you can play around with the shadows on this image.

Duplicate the top layer. Go to Filter> Blur>Box Blur… and set it to 5 pixels. We’re going to take care of the lips, because they are way too shinny.

Add a Layer Mask, invert it (Ctrl+I) and, with the brush, draw the lips. Your next step is to lower the Opacity to 50%.

You can stop here, looking at this image, because it looks pretty well, but you can also add color layers.

When you need to make the skin look better, you can use the Eyedropper Tool and take the color from her forehead. In a new Layer (Layer> New> Layer…) you can cover the imperfections left – zits, darker zones – and lower the Opacity until it looks natural.

You can also add make-up or change the color of the lips or the eyes.

To change the color of the eyes, simply create a New Layer and cover them with the color that you want. Next set the layer on Soft Light. I used #3a6130, then set the Layer to the Soft Light Blending Mode and lowered the Opacity to 60%, but you can do whatever you think looks good. Use your imagination!

Also, you may add blush or eye shadow. I won’t do that to this image, because I believe that it looks way nicer, natural.

In the same way, you may also darken or lighten the color of the hair.

At the end, after you did all these things, it would be a really nice idea to add a New Stamp (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+E) and Sharpen it (Filter> Sharpen> Sharpen More). Go to Edit > Fade Sharpen More… and bring it to about 30%.

Also, you may add a border or text or even manipulate the colors using Selective Color, Color Balance, Brightness/Contrast etc.

And you’re done:

  2. Hi! Quick question that’s completely off topic. Do you know how to make your site mobile friendly? My site looks weird when browsing from my apple iphone. I’m trying to find a template or plugin that might be able to resolve this problem. If you have any recommendations, please share. Cheers!
